Title: The International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA) and the development of occultation science

Occultation Science began in antiquity. My own interest began in the 1950’s, while the network of observers that became IOTA began primarily with lunar grazing occultations in the early 1960’s. The work, and my career, were closely tied to the emerging US space program. IOTA’s work evolved to asteroidal occultations as observers, even now, develop better ways to record the phenomena. The “Gaia revolution” has allowed IOTA observers to convincingly discover many asteroidal satellites and contribute importantly to planetary defense. The challenge is to convince more of the legions of amateur astrophotographers that they can contribute to occultation studies with inexpensive equipment and techniques with our education and encouragement.
