Title: New challenges in the Hayabusa2 extended mission

Japan’s asteroid explorer Hayabusa2 has extended its mission and continues to fly in space after delivering samples from the asteroid Ryugu to Earth at the end of 2020. This is called the “Hayabusa2 Extended Mission” (nicknamed Hayabusa2#). Next year (2026), a flyby exploration of the asteroid Torifune, the first target of the
extended mission, is scheduled to take place. Here we will explain Hayabusa2#, its purpose and current operational status.
