Associate Staff Scientist

Yuko KAWAGUCHI-AMIKURA
Ph.D. in Life Sciences
Born in Okayama and raised in Kyoto, I have been fascinated by the question, “Is Earth the only place in the universe where life exists?” since I was a junior high school student. This curiosity led me to pursue a career in scientific research.
Key Research Areas:
Astrobiology, Space Microbiology, Microbial survival in extreme environments
Technical Expertise:
Viability assessment of microorganisms using culture-based techniques
Contributions at PERC:
• Freeze-drying project for spaceflight microbial samples
• Microbial analysis in stratospheric balloon experiments
Until 2019, my research focused on understanding the resilience of terrestrial microorganisms under extreme conditions to explore the possibility of life beyond Earth. Currently, I am involved in microbial analysis of samples collected from the upper atmosphere as part of ongoing PERC projects.
In addition to research, I actively engage in science communication and STEAM education, developing hands-on programs inspired by space science. My goal is to help children appreciate the beauty of life on Earth and to expand their perspectives through the wonders of the universe.
Since December 2024, I have been working as an Assistant Professor at the University Research Administration (URA) Office of Saitama University, leading outreach activities for the JST ERATO Toyota Plant Sensory Project, which bridges science and society.
Hobbies: Origami, swimming, and enjoying good food
