About PERC

Description of Activities

Design and development of observational equipment

We independently design and develop equipment for observational and other purposes that is installed on satellites used for planetary exploration. Our activities include devising equipment that simulates planetary environments for use in basic terrestrial experiments. We also create technologies for developing new observational equipment that contributes to planetary exploration research carried out by JAXA, NASA, and other agencies in Japan and elsewhere.

Planetary exploration date analysis

We process and analyze data gleaned by planetary probes and observational equipment PERC has produced to discover the data’s significance to planetary science. We also analyze data obtained by the asteroid probe Hayabusa2 and from other planetary exploration projects in which we are involved.

Planetary science research

Using newly acquired data and knowledge obtained during planetary exploration, we carry out research and strive to construct theoretical models to explain these findings. For example, we construct crater formation models to decipher the histories of planets, and work out the paths planets took as they originated and evolved.

Planetary Exploration Basic Technology Development and Human Resource Development Center

Planetary Exploration Research Center (PERC), Chiba Institute of Technology was selected as a collaborative center for university use with Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in 2017, and started full-scale activities in 2018. At the center, we will establish a cycle of continuous training of human resources for solar system exploration through a series of schemes to develop observation and measurement instruments for small objects and dust, while advancing specific exploration plans such as the DESTINY+ mission, which is currently under development. PERC aims to contribute to the future exploration of the solar system by establishing itself as a development center for astronomical imaging cameras and dust observation equipment through the activities of this collaboration center.
